Cln Infection, Microbiology & Immunology

Salary: £32,478 – £57,444 pa (indicative range). Appointment salary will depend on discipline norms and (where applicable) with due regard paid to the appointees’ stage of clinical training.

Deadline: 19 January 2018 at 23:30

The University of Liverpool and Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine seek applications from medical or veterinary graduates for our next annual cohort of Clinical PhD studentships, commencing 1 September 2018, and funded by The Wellcome Trust.

These posts offer exciting opportunities for research training, and are designed as the first step towards developing a research career in diseases of resource poor settings. The Liverpool Clinical PhD Programme has strong links with many potential overseas research sites.

4 Year Fellowship (3 posts)

The first year will be based in Liverpool completing an MRes, and the remaining 3 years spent predominantly overseas in a lower middle income country (LMIC), completing a clinical research PhD project, addressing a research question of relevance to local health needs. The initial appointment shall be for 1 year only, extended by a further 3 years upon acceptance of a PhD proposal.

Flexible 3 or 4 Year fellowship (1 post)

Applicants for the flexible post can choose to follow the 4 year fellowship model above, or undertake a 3 year option. 3 year post applicants could spend a reduced period of time overseas should personal circumstances dictate, but the need to focus on health problems relevant to LMICs would remain.

Those applying for the 3 year option would be expected to have a well-developed research project before taking up the post and should discuss their plans with the PhD Programme Directors before applying.

To apply, Medical graduates must have passed the relevant specialty postgraduate exam e.g. MRCP, MRCS, MRCOphth/FRCOphth Part 1, MRCPsych, MRCOG Part 1, MRCPCH, FRCA Part 1. GPs are advised to contact the office to clarify their eligibility. It is anticipated that most applicants will have already commenced specialist training, but this is not essential. Medical appointments will be made according to the University’s standard clinical pay scale.

Veterinary graduates must be eligible for registration with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and have at least 2 years post graduate (clinical, research or other relevant) experience. Veterinary graduates are advised to contact the office to clarify their eligibility. Veterinary appointments will be made according to standard (non-clinical) University pay scales.

Applicants must demonstrate a substantive connection to the European Economic Area (EEA) as defined at: https://www.gov.uk/eu-eea

Successful applicants who conduct projects in Malawi should note that this appointment will be subject to in-country tax regulations and Malawian Tax will be deducted from salary by the employer.
