Position Description

The Department of Global Health and Population, Harvard School of Public Health is seeking a Visiting Scientist to work with Professor Margaret Kruk on research in the area of health system quality and responsiveness in low- and middle-income countries.

Professor Kruk leads several research projects related to improving performance of health systems and population preferences for health services. Most recently, she led the Lancet Global Health Commission on High Quality Health Systems. The Visiting Scientist will pursue work related to the analyses and recommendations of the Commission, involving both primary and secondary data. She is seeking a motivated and capable Visiting Scientist to pursue innovative analyses with the potential for high policy impact. The analyses will be predominantly quantitative using data from household and facility surveys and health information systems. Geospatial analyses and creative data visualization will be emphasized to promote policymaker uptake. Study countries will include: Tanzania, Liberia, and Ethiopia, among others.

The successful candidate will:

  • Assist with analysis and writing of research papers
  • Design study protocols, research instruments, including survey tools and other metrics
  • Participate in research collaborations with partners in the US and other countries
  • Participate in dissemination activities, including production and presentation of project reports and policy briefs
  • May develop and support grant proposals

Basic Qualifications

Applicants must have a master’s degree or equivalent in economics, epidemiology, public health, health policy and/or management, global health, health systems, public policy or a related field. Candidates should also have the following:
1) strong quantitative skills, including data management, expertise with Stata coding and statistical analysis including analysis of survey data;
2) strong writing skills;
3) high-level interpersonal and organizational skills and
4) demonstrated ability to work independently.
Familiarity with health systems and data in low- and middle-income countries is desirable. This project may involve travel to project countries and/or within the United States. The ideal candidate is someone who anticipates undertaking further advanced research training in future. This position would offer mentorship and experience in an active research environment as well as opportunities for authorship. The position is for one year, with the potential for renewal.
