JNMA Workshop on HINARI Basic Course: JNMA is the first and oldest medical journal published by Nepal Medical Association since 1963. It is internationally peer reviewed, PubMed index general medical journal that publishes Original Article, Review Article, Case Reports, Medical Education, Viewpoints, and Letter to the Editors, quarterly. JNMA also provides cutting-edge training related to research and publication.
HINARI Basic Course focuses on the skills necessary for accessing and using the Hinari resources including searching skills, the Hinari portal and PubMed searching to get full-text article from thousands of journals.
Hinari is a Research4Life program managed by the World Health Organization, that offers a collection of more than 14,000 journals and 56,000 books in the fields of health information. 6,200 institutions in more than 115 eligible countries have registered for free or at a low-cost to the programme, benefiting many thousands of health workers and researchers, and in turn, contributing to improved world health.
The Hinari Programme is a public-private partnership set up by WHO together with major publishers, Yale University Library and technical partners. Hinari enables developing countries like Nepal to gain access to one of the world’s largest collections of biomedical and health literature.
You can get access to thousands of journals and their articles through HINARI from Nepal. This course will help you use HINARI in the best way possible.
Training Learning objectives:
- Demonstrate and reflect upon conceptualisation of research within healthcare
- Assessing the importance and appropriateness of the research design
- Understanding the importance of ethical implications within healthcare research
- Thinking about the dissemination process, including publication in a peer-reviewed journal.

Module 1 – Research4Life background
Description of the Research4Life programmes, Do’s & Don’ts, technical requirements, types of journals, journal impact factor
Module 2 – Internet searching and website evaluation
Gateways, search engines & databases, Google vs. Scholar vs. PubMed, Boolean & advanced searching, evaluation of websites, searching Databases Using Wild Cards, Truncation & Phrase Searching
Module 3 – Hinari portal
Background, find articles by journal title, subject, language & publisher, overview of e-Book access, other databases, reference sources & free resources
Module 4 – PubMed database interface
Connect/navigate in PubMed, search, display & send to options
Module 5 – PubMed filters
Publication date, language, age, type of article, field tag filters & more
Module 6 – PubMed search options
History and advanced search tool
Module 7 – Summon
Google like search tool for Hinari journals & e-Books, Summon vs, PubMed, search/preview features, export, print & email tools, refine search options

- 70% of the seats will be reserved for NMA members and 30% are allocated for non-members
